STEM Week

This week the children have had the opportunity to explore lots of different STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) related activities. They have worked in small groups to tackle challenges set in each of the Key Stage 1 classes.

They had to work as part of a team to try and build the tallest tower using plastic cups, cubes and lollipop sticks. Sound easy? The ONLY part of their tower that could touch the floor was one cube!

The children persevered, changing and adapting their ideas... until they were successful! They realised that it was important to make everything balance and place each item on the tower with great care. Some groups explored ways of using the lollipop sticks to make a platform on which to balance the cups.

The children discussed what happens when liquid soap is added to milk and food colouring. They had a wonderful time looking at and talking about the patterns that were made. They used lollipop sticks to see how they could change the patterns.

The children explored animals frozen in ice. They talked about how the ice would change as it melted. Some children suggested ways in which they could make the ice melt more quickly. They realised that they could use their hands to melt the ice. Once the ice had melted a little the children enjoyed looking at and describing the patterns in the ice.

We set up an experiment to see if we could mix colours using food colouring and tissues... and it worked!!
