Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1T (2019 - 2020)

This week the children have enjoyed exploring their new classroom. They have played with their friends in different parts of the classroom environment.

The children have designed labels for their cubbies.











We have introduced the children to our new topic 'The Magic Toymaker'. They have watched a video of a real magician to help them understand the key terms. The children have made magic wands by winding ribbon around sticks that they found in the outdoor area. They also made magicians hats which they decorated with 2D shapes.

Their magic skills are so good that they can make people disappear... AND re-appear!

The children made magic potions! They explored their new outdoor area to find natural things to add to their potions.













We added the natural items to magic potion pots, together with sequins and 'gelli baf'.

Then we poured in some water and watched the magic happen...







































We dressed up as magicians!













We read the story of The Magic Porridge Pot. Then we used our senses to explore porridge oats. We all enjoyed making porridge, but not all of us enjoyed eating it!

This week we have been exploring the terms more and less in Maths. We have used cubes, interactive games and large number cards on the floor. These activities have enabled the children to explore number names, number order and patterns in numbers. We have also written numbers to show our answers. The children have enjoyed taking part in Chilli Challenges where they have been able to choose to explore larger numbers (up to 100). In English this week we have continued to focus on the story of The Elves and the Shoemaker. The children have really enjoyed taking on the roles of the different characters to act out the story. The Mystery Box

On Monday the children arrived to find a mystery parcel had been left on the carpet with a sign that said 'Do NOT Open'. During their English lesson they spent time guessing what was inside by listening to it, watching to see if it moved and shaking it. They then wrote their ideas on speech bubbles. On Tuesday the children found the parcel had been left again, but this time it had a sign that read: 'Please Open'... so we did! And what did we find? We found a shoe! But only one! Who did it belong to? We all tried it on to see if it fit... The shoe did not fit anyone in the class... it was TOO BIG! The children decided to search the classroom for the other shoe, but could not find it. Then someone suggested we have a look outside. We did not find the shoe, but we did find lots of pictures! Subtraction and Snow White

In English this week we have been focusing on the fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The children were introduced to the characters from the story at the beginning of the week. Some children programmed the Beebot to send it from one character to the next. Other children played a bingo game using the characters from the story. The children have designed their own front covers for the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. They have also created their own mirrors inside, using bubble writing to write 'Mirror, mirror on the wall'. In Maths we have been exploring subtraction. For the first activity we created a 'magic bus' that would take the children to wherever they wanted to travel. The children enjoyed choosing their destination and constructing each new number sentence when others got off the bus.
